Despite writing last week that I try not to think about my manuscript as a “book” as much as possible, I am trying to be realistic. I just passed 26k words total. Right now, I’m writing about 1500 words a week, which means I’m likely to hit 30k before the end of the year. My goal is to increase that to 2500 words at the start of next year, going from 300 words a day (five days a week) to 500. If I’m hoping this first draft ends up around 100k words, to be rewritten down to around 75k in the second draft, that puts this draft finishing around July, early summer next year. From there, I’d hope to take a month or two off from it, before spending some time breaking what I’d written down, analyzing it and outlining it, shaping the narrative towards the next form. Then, the rewrite starts.
